Urban Health Plan’s youngest patients (and their parents) start their health journey and future school success strong with a new book in each pediatric exam room, thanks to the Reach Out & Read program. Reach Out & Read (ROR) promotes the benefits of early literacy by bringing new books and advice about the importance of reading aloud into the doctor’s office.
Doctors and nurses give new books to children six months to age five at each well-child visit. They also encourage parents to read aloud with their children at home. The research-based ROR program model is rooted in the connection between the frequency of sharing books with babies, toddlers, and young children and enhanced language development.
The Reach Out and Read Program is offered at Urban Health Plan’s El Nuevo San Juan Health Center, Simpson Pavilion, Bella Vista Community Health Center, Tres Puentes Community Health Center, and Plaza Del Sol Family Health Center.
