Building on a Legacy of Vision and Service
Dr. Richard “Doc” Izquierdo’s story is a powerful testament to determination and vision. Serving his community was a guiding force throughout his life.
One of his dreams was to return to the community where he was raised in the Bronx and provide equitable, community-based healthcare delivered by people who understood the culture and language of its residents. In 1974, Doc fulfilled this dream, and today, Urban Health Plan is one of the largest community health systems in New York State.
However, Doc’s vision went beyond his health center. Recognizing the growing level of health disparities, the looming shortage of primary care providers, and the stark underrepresentation of physicians of color in our country, something stirred within him—a desire to create a lasting impact.
In September 2010, at the age of 80, he co-founded the Dr. Richard Izquierdo Health and Science Charter School in the South Bronx, in partnership with Urban Health Plan. The school serves as more than just a place of learning; it stands as a beacon of hope by promoting diversity, closing the achievement gap, and increasing the number of students pursuing higher education. Additionally, it prepares and nurtures the next generation of locally-grown healthcare professionals.
Since its inception, the school has consistently achieved impressive college acceptance rates and has effectively prepared students for the challenges of higher education.
We are honored to serve as a clinical training site for Dr. Richard Izquierdo Health and Science Charter School students. As a model of excellence in providing holistic healthcare for underserved communities, our collaboration addresses multiple social drivers of health, including education equity, while offering students invaluable service-learning experiences.
Together, these achievements ensure that Doc’s legacy of empowering his community and his dedication to service and education endures.
